My journey with jewelry design and repair

Ahhhh, No School! April 1, 2009

Snow again today.  Hopefully I will be able to find my dremel, so that I can clean some of my beads that I’ve made over the past few weeks.  Lots of errands to run today and lunch with hubby.  Hopefully I will get to some more organizing in my studio.  If I find my dremel, I will come back and post some more photos.  Thats a big IF!

No bead photos, but here are a couple pictures of my niece and nephew holding the puppies that we have for sale.

Photos finally April 1, 2009

Well I am finally figuring out how to take photographs of my work.  A new friend of mine has sort of taken me under her wings, so to speak.  I can’t thank her enough for being so helpful and giving with her information.  You can check out her blog at Donna/Fyrebeadz.

Life is still crazy busy here.  I have a feeling it’s going to be that way until school is out for me.  I’m still having a blast with school and learn something new everyday.  My current project is to wax carve a bangle bracelet out.   I have an idea in my head that I hope will work out when I start on my project.

Here is my first bead photo I took and edited by myself.  Still learning, but I will get the hang of it.

I’m tired March 28, 2009

I stayed up til 2 am torching/making beads last night. Woke up this morning to only a few that I really like. That’s what usually happens though. It is fun finally getting back to the torch. That is one of the main reasons I went back to school for jewelry design and repair. I wanted to combine my skills of bead making into jewelry design. I have a little more then 1 semester left and I will get my diploma.

I’m hoping to get to the kitchen walls today. I would really like to know who the idiot was that invented wallpaper. I will NEVER, repeat, NEVER put up wallpaper again. It is just too much work to take it down.

Well I better get going for the day, now that it is almost noon.

What makes a mom smile! March 27, 2009

Below is a copy of the interview my daughter did with me.  Just had to share.  She graduates in June.

Interviewing someone is a good way to get to know them and find out more about them. There are many different questions you can ask someone when you are interviewing them. The questions you ask all depend on what kind of interview you are doing. I interviewed my mom and found out a lot of interesting things.

I picked my mom to interview because I thought that I could get good answers from her. She is around most of the time so it would be easier to have time to do it with her. I did find out a lot of interesting things about her. I asked her a question about where she is from. She said that she lived in Stillwater, Minnesota till she was 30 years old. I had no idea that she lived there that long. I knew she grew up in Stillwater and lived there for awhile, but not that long.

The next question I asked her was what she liked to do for fun. She likes to surf the internet, scrapbook, make jewelry, and spend time with family. I find it interesting that she is so crafty. She is really good at scrapbooking and is very creative with it. She is going to school for making jewelry. She has come a long way in her schooling and even made me a ring for my Christmas present last Christmas. I thought it turned out really good for just being a beginner. It just takes time to learn something new till your good at it. Some people learn faster than others. She also loves the color purple. She sees it as a sign of hope. She also has a lot of favorite movies and TV shows. Some of her favorite TV shows are Medium, Ghost Whisperer, and the Unit. Her favorite movie is Mama Mia. She has watched it a lot and even owns the movie now. She got the movie for Christmas last year.

Some of the other questions I asked were about were where she likes to vacation, most memorable memory, favorite season, etc. When I asked her where she like to vacation she said she loves Florida. She also really enjoys going on cruises. I couldn’t agree with her more about Florida. I love Florida and we have vacationed there numerous times. We have gone about every year to every other year. She has also been on a couple cruises. The whole family went on one a couple years ago and it was a blast. When asked about her most memorable moment, she said when Natalie (my sister) had her bone marrow transplant and got a new lease on life. I think that was a memorable memory for all of us. It was a really hard time when she was going through that because it’s scary and she was so young. I also asked her what her favorite season was. She said that her favorite season is spring. She likes the warm weather after a long winter. She also said that it’s nice to see the robins and all the flowers and plants start to bloom.

That is what I got from interviewing my mom. I think that we have a lot in common with the things we like and what we like to do. My mom was one of the best people I could have interviewed. I wouldn’t have chosen anyone different. (by: Kayla)

Time is moving too fast March 27, 2009

So much going on here still. Today my youngest daughter has to go to the U of MN to have an echo done. For those that don’t know about her, she is my miracle child. She is a 10 year survivor of Leukemia and a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately that comes with a price. She has chronic renal failure due to the chemo and radiation. Basically her kidneys only work at 60%.

Last time she had an echo her heart was enlarged due to uncontrolled blood pressure. I’m sure that it has gone back down, due to her BP being under control.

Will try to remember to update when we get the results.

Another busy day. Advanced wax carving is my class for today. I will be working on making some stacked rings. This afternoon I have an electrician coming over to get an estimate on hooking up my larger kiln.

Early morning! March 24, 2009

Getting up at 6:30 am to get my youngest daughter to school. This is a huge feat, since I am NOT a morning person. I’m so glad that she is happy and enjoying life again.

Heading to bed early and then get up tomorrow and start all over.

No photos yet March 21, 2009

Well, sorry to report that I don’t have photos yet. I have seemed to have lost my bead cleaner. I can’t post photos of beads that aren’t clean. The beads aren’t anything special. Just trying to get into the groove of making beads again.

My hubby did like his fish bead. Didn’t care too much for the purple lips, lol. He said he wants to keep it though. Isn’t that cute.

He is so supportive of me, my hobbies and my crazy adventures that I often go on. Not sure when I will get time to look for my bead cleaner.

My youngest daughter switched bedrooms and lets just say that her stuff is spread out all over the house. Hopefully next week she can go through the packed boxes and decide what she will keep and what goes to Good will.

I’m heading to bed early tonight. Have to get my older daughter to University of River Falls for placement testing by 7:45 am. Yikes, that is WAY to early for this night owl.

Life is always changing. March 20, 2009

I am officially unemployed. Hopefully I will be able to find another job that will work into my school and family life schedule.

I spent yesterday at the Mall of America with my 2 girls, my mom and a friend of my daughters. We had a good time. I was hoping to find some new pants, but just couldn’t find what I was looking for. I think if and when I finally find some that I like, I will have to buy a few pair.

We had a nice lunch at Nordstrom’s and walked around all 3 levels of the mall. Let’s just say that I was exhausted when we got home.

I did spend a few hours at the torch yesterday. My friend Donna suggested that if I wanted to retain some of the things I learned that I should torch a few times this week.

I will try and see if I can get some photos later today.

Have a GREAT DAY!

A New Day! March 18, 2009

I had such good intentions when I started this blog to be more faithful in blogging daily.  I have been inspired by a friend to blog more.  She blogs almost everyday about what is happening in her life, her dogs, new beads, etc.  I follow her blog often and it is so fun to read the happening in her small town.

This week I am off from school, due to spring break.  I spent a few days with Donna – Fyrebeadz* and had a GREAT time.  She taught me so many things and her home was so peaceful.  Some things I learned were making HUGE and I mean huge beads.  Well they were huge for this tiny bead maker.

Here is a list of some of the things I learned:

Big hole beads, made a fish, faux boro, using frit and gravity, cutting copper tubing, copper bead caps, metal stamping, cored Pandora beads, Liver of sulfer.  We talked lots, shared stories, watched a movie and drank some wine.  I had such a wonderful time.  Make sure you check out Donna’s website and also her blog.

Help support her at being a full-time bead maker.

We did all that in 2 days.  It was a refreshing break away from the chaos going on at my house.

I am going to try and upload a few photos.  Since I haven’t done that yet, I’m not sure if it will work.
